Patiently waiting....

...to find out if I still have a job. I already know that I've been transferred to the other high school that is on the other side of the Interstate. But, hey, at least I still have a job. For now.

Unfortunately, over the past month, my school district has been in the process of cutting almost 100 of the 550 certificated employees. Our student to teacher ratio was already 30-40 students per teacher before the cuts began. I can't imagine what the size of our classes will be with 100 fewer teachers. So the last round of cuts happened yesterday (62 teachers), and notices are going out today and Monday. I have no seniority, and, hence, I won't be surprised if I get a notice. Since I am a high school teacher, though, I have a better chance of keeping my job.

Still, the waiting is nerve wracking!

Even schools are taking a cut? That bad han. They fired 850 people from my firm. All my friends are gone. I am probably one of the youngest in the firm now. If the next list comes, I might get the axe too. Tough times.

Hope you are safe.

PS: Whenever a list comes, I cant help but feel like the contestant in one of those reality shows with the host saying you are safe or not.

Update: my friend and I did not get an "e-mail", but one of our friends did. But it will probably take a few weeks before the dust settles and we learn who for sure will be gone and who will stay.

Glad you are safe too, aniket - this does seem as if we are contestants in some kind of wicked show.

Yes, when this economic downturn began, I distinctly remember saying to my husband, "glad I'm a teacher because they always need teachers." We are in a bad place when even schools are trying to do without teachers.

Yikes! Best of luck Jana! I hope it won't affect you, and I'm sad for all of those who are being affected. It's a scary time right now!

There are people who think the state should not employ any teachers. (I am not one of those people.) I hope you not only continue to be employed but that you come to like the new school and its administration more than the old school and administration.

Thanks, all!

What did you find out? Here, we aren't cutting yet. I live in one of the only growing areas in WV, so we didn't have to RIF anyone. Thanks be.

I still have my job...for now. What happens next will depend on contract negotiations. The district has asked the teachers to make several concessions regarding our salary, and I think that if the teachers won't take the concessions, then there will be more RIFs. It won't be pretty.

The crazy thing is that we are one of the few districts in the city that are actually *growing* - did I mention that the freshmen English classes where I taught last year had 40 kids per class? And next year, there will be more freshmen, only there will be fewer teachers...

Those are ridiculous class sizes. Our very strong unions won't allow those things to happen here, even though we don't have collective bargaining. The unions are so powerful that the legislature and local districts don't want to tangle with them.
